I was in the living room playing with Michael when Mommy called from the kitchen and asked him if he would open a can for her. "Open Can?" he responded...She didn't have to ask twice. He deserted me and beelined for the kitchen. Mommy handed him the can of tomatoes, and Michael got the can opener out, positioned it on the can on the kitchen floor and pressed the power button. Then he proceeded to observe the action from almost every angle. When it was finished the can opener stopped, Michael lifted it off, grabbed the lid, observed the tomatoes, (presumably to pronounce them good) and handed the opened can back to Mommy. He proceeded to put the can opener back in the appropriate drawer and ran back to play.
For those of you not familiar with this type of can opener, it is a totally self propelled can opener that cuts on the side so that there are no sharp edges. You put the opener on the top of the can, push the power button, and it orientates itself, and proceeds to cut around the can until it cuts through and then it somehow senses it and stops. The whole processes is quick and simple, and can be accomplished by a 2 year old (kinda scary huh??) It also does not require the fuss of a regular electric can opener which requires two hands and adult supervision because of sharp edges, and can be done entirely with one hand (the main reason we bought it).
